The Optical Confederation and the Ophthalmic Group of the BMA’s fee negotiating body – the Optometric Fees Review Committee (OFRC) – has launched a survey to measure the average length of time that a sight test takes.
The survey has been sent to one in 10 optometrists, and the Optical Confederation is calling on all optometrists and optical practices contacted to participate.
The Optical Confederation has also asked employers to allow optometrists to complete the survey in work time.
In the past, the survey was funded by the Department of Health but was abandoned when this responsibility transferred to the NHS and Social Care Information Centre in Leeds.
As a result, information on the average time to perform a sight test, which the Department of Health uses in fee negotiations, has not been updated since 2000. Since then, it has been suggested the time taken to perform a sight test has lengthened, particularly given the ageing profile of the population.
Claire Slade, chair of the OFRC, said: “Despite repeated requests, the NHS and Social Care Information Centre has been loath to repeat the sight test survey so we have no option but to do it ourselves. This is one of those times when we are asking Optical Confederation members to contribute for the good of all. Knowing the optical professions as we do, we are confident of a very good response.”
