A total of 199 students have been removed from the GOC register having failed to renew their retention for the 2012-13 academic year, the regulator confirmed today (September 4). Undergraduates who fail to renew are unable to sit exams or complete clinical training.
The figure, however, marks a decrease for the third consecutive year, down from 217 removed in 2011 and 386 in 2010. The number of those removed represents 4.5% of the student register.
The regulator will send a list of those who have been removed to all institutions.
GOC head of registration, Philip Hallam, said: “The vast majority of students completed their retention on time and are now all set for the new academic year. However, for the small minority who fail to renew, the impact is serious. They cannot now continue their course until they have been restored to the registers and will have to pay an extra £20 on top of their annual registration fee.”
Those who have been removed, but intend to continue with their course must now apply for their name to be restored to the registers before term begins. They must submit a completed restoration form by post, along with the £40 fee – double the standard £20 if they had applied by the July deadline.

- Over the coming months the GOC will host a series of roadshows addressing first year undergraduates enrolled on all GOC-approved optometry and dispensing courses. For more details, visit the GOC website.
