A national charity has produced an online film aimed at practitioners to highlight the barriers which prevent people at risk of sight loss accessing eye care services.
The RNIB film, which can be viewed at
www.rnib.org.uk/healthprofessionals, also covers the factors which motivate those at risk to have their eyes checked regularly, attend hospital appointments and comply with treatment regimes.
Focusing on a recent research finding, which reported that people linked eye health to good vision, but not the detection of eye conditions. A fear of blindness was also raised.
The film explores the views of patients interviewed in the five communities – Bradford, Hackney, Glasgow, Belfast and Cwm Taf – the study was based in.
The project saw the RNIB liaise with local stakeholders to establish five Community Engagement Projects (CEP) across the UK in which people have a higher risk of developing glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
David Allen, head of sight loss prevention at the RNIB, said: “Poor patient experience and concerns over the cost of glasses are barriers to accessing eye care services. Conversely, a much more positive patient experience and continuity of treatment will help people to understand their eye health and get their eyes tested more regularly.”
Supporting the research findings, president of the College of Optometrists, Kamlesh Chauhan, said: “We want everyone to see as clearly as possible; optometrists are the eye health professionals in the community who can help the public do this.”
