Sport-specific lenses on the rise, survey confirms

July 24 2012

Over half of independent opticians in the UK have seen a rise in the number of people ordering lenses specifically designed for sport over the last two years, a survey conducted by Rodenstock has found.

Researchers reported that 58% of the 381 independents questioned confirmed that the amount of sports-related lenses had received a boost, with lenses for cycling proving most popular (36%).

Patients buying lenses for other sports included skiing and golf, with just under 20% each, while lenses for running, tennis and hiking were also mentioned.

Lens product manager at Rodenstock, Debbie Bathgate told OT: “We are seeing orders increase steadily year-on-year, and the Olympics seem to be providing a catalyst for people taking sports seriously.

“More and more people are realising that sports eyewear can enhance their performance.”
