Optom torchbearers in London

July 24 2012

AOP councillor Zahra Jessa (pictured) and, chair of Vision Care for Homeless People, Elaine Styles, will carry the Olympic torch through London later this week.

The optometrist duo were among the 8,000 people selected from across the UK to carry the flame during the build up to the 2012 Olympics.

While Ms Jessa will carry the touch through Barnet in North London tomorrow (July 25), Ms Styles will run with it in Wandsworth, South London on Thursday (July 26).

Ms Styles is also a volunteer on the medical team at the polyclinic in the Olympic village, having completed her first shift on July 16. She was nominated to be a torchbearer by a volunteer at Vision Care for Homeless People, a charity which provides homeless people with free sight tests and spectacles.

Speaking about being a torchbearer, Ms Jessa, an optometrist at Moorfields, said: “I feel privileged and honoured to be part of putting my home borough on the Olympic map, just as I am rally excited to be part of such a memorable, once in a lifetime event and sharing this moment with my family, friends and local community.”
