The number of student optometrists and dispensing opticians that have renewed their GOC registration before the summer deadline has risen for a second consecutive year.
A total of 87.6% of students met the July 15 cut-off for 2012, up from 87% last year and 78% in 2010.
The regulator cited its MyGOC online registration system as the reason for the rise, which has been available for students to use since 2011.
GOC head of registration, Philip Hallam, said: “These figures show that the significantly better retention rates last year were no aberration.
“A survey of over 100 students last year showed that the vast majority find the system quick and easy to use. This has once again helped far more students to meet this important deadline.”
Despite the availability of the online system, one-in-six students still failed to renew with the GOC and will now face additional costs.
A total of 548 students missed the deadline, which will result in a £10 late application charge on top of the £20 fee. Anyone who has still not applied by August 31 will be unable to continue their studies until they have re-registered at a further cost of £40.
“Those students who missed the deadline should remember that GOC registration is a legal requirement,” added Mr Hallam.
“Until they register they are putting their careers at risk, as they may be unable to take part in clinical training or exams.”
