Long-term president of the AOP and FODO, Don Grocott (pictured) has been appointed as the first chairman of the Optical Confederation. He stands down from his role with both optical bodies as a result. Current AOP senior vice president and renter warden of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers Chris Hunt becomes president of the AOP.
AOP chairman, David Shannon, said: “Don has been a great advocate for the Optical Confederation since it was formed; indeed, he was one of the prime advocates for its formation. So it is only fitting that as a long-time servant of the sector and an espouser of the concept of the confederation, he should become its first chairman.”
President since 2000, Mr Grocott is also an ex-chairman of the ACLM, and a former managing director of Bausch & Lomb and the Nissel Group.
Chair of FODO, Jayne Rawlinson, added: “Don has been an excellent president of FODO and we will be sorry to see him go. But we are delighted that Don has agreed to take on this important role and congratulate him on his well-deserved appointment. We very much look forward to working with him in his new capacity and can think of no-one better to lead the Optical Confederation through its new phase of development.”
FODO confirmed it would not be appointing a new president.
Welcoming Mr Grocott’s appointment on behalf of ABDO, the FMO and the ACLM, Nigel Mallinson – chairman of the ACLM – commented: “We are delighted to welcome someone of Don’s stature to this leadership role and are grateful to our AOP and FODO colleagues for releasing him. Under his chairmanship the Optical Confederation will go from strength to strength.”
Speaking on his appointment to president of the AOP, Mr Hunt, who has been a senior vice president of the Association since 2006, said: “I am thrilled and honoured to take up the post at a time when the Association is at its most progressive. During my six years as senior vice president, I have got to know the team well and know them to be highly professional and totally dedicated to their task. The future looks bright.”
- During the AOP’s AGM in Cardiff yesterday (May 15), Mr Grocott was awarded the Peter Yeo Medal, which recognises outstanding contributions to the profession and is the highest accolade offered by the AOP.
