Four new optometrists have been elected to AOP Council, the Association has confirmed. They are Zahra Jessa and Lynne Weddell for the London constituency, Peter Hampson in South West England and West Midlands, and Stewart Mitchell for Yorkshire and The Humber and North East England.
Speaking to OT after learning the results, optometrist and new Council member, Dr Jessa, told OT: “I’m really excited to be involved [with the AOP Council] and am looking forward to the new challenge.”
Also a new councillor, senior lecturer at City University, Lynne Weddell, commented: “I was absolutely delighted to learn that I had been elected to the AOP Council. I am looking forward to my first meeting and a chance to represent my profession.”
Mr Mitchell, an optometrist and independent practice owner, and new Council member, added: “I was surprised and pleased [on hearing the results] because there was a number of previous councillors standing for re-election in the constituency; the competition was intense.”
Voting for this year’s AOP Council elections closed on April 5, with five seats available in the constituencies of London; North West England; and South West England and West Midlands; and six for Yorkshire and The Humber and North East England.
