Optometrists in East Yorkshire have donated a high power slit lamp bio-microscope for Hull Royal Infirmary’s new clinical
skills facility. The microscope plays a vital role in detailed eye examinations and will be used for training optometrists and other healthcare professionals in special diagnostic and monitoring techniques.
East Yorkshire LOC recognised the need for the instrument to be available in an educational environment, commented chairman Vivian Bush (pictured). The training facility can now help primary and secondary care eye health clinicians to develop their skills. For optometrists in particular, this is important in broadening the range of services for patients within a community setting.
“Optometrists in the Hull and East Yorkshire area can become accredited to provide our new community Ophthalmic Referral Refinement Service or CORRS,” explained Mr Bush. “It has been developed to improve patient convenience and access, while reducing pressure on the busy hospital outpatients department. The scheme is currently funded by the PCTs, but is expected to be adopted by the new Clinical Commissioning Groups in 2013. The LOC has worked closely with the PCT, GPs and local ophthalmologists to make this happen.”
The LOC wants as many local optometrists as possible to obtain the scheme accreditation and the new microscope is expected to be a big help to increase numbers and patient choice.
All optometrists in Hull and East Yorkshire are invited to attend an accredited peer review evening, organised and sponsored by the LOC on September 10. For details see
