The International Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) defines dry eyes as "a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface". Dry eyes can have a profound effect on a patient's comfort, vision and quality of life. Accurate diagnosis and classification of its severity is, therefore, important in developing an effective treatment plan, and this article discusses the optimal optometric approach.
