Age-related sight loss is a major public health concern given the increasingly aged population and due to changes in demographics in most Western societies. People in the UK are living nearly 30 years longer now compared with 100 years ago and increases in life expectancy are continuing at a rate of approximately 4 months per year. Major advances in the treatment of conditions such as heart disease and cancer are enabling people to live long enough to develop classical degenerative conditions associated with ageing, such as Alzheimer's disease, cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This article discusses the important relationship between lifestyle and ocular disease and it is hoped that eye care practitioners are encouraged to promote healthy living amongst their patients.
